You’ve likely heard of root canals for adults and may have even had one yourself. But did you know that sometimes root canals can be necessary for kids? Even though baby teeth eventually fall out, they serve several important roles in your child’s mouth—one of which is to preserve enough space for their adult teeth to come in for a straight and beautiful smile. Sometimes, root canals are necessary to keep a baby tooth in place, to restore one of your child’s permanent teeth back to health. At Sweet Tooth Orthodontics and Children’s Dentistry in Rancho Cucamonga, CA, we provide gentle and effective endodontic treatment to keep your child’s smile healthy and pain-free!
How root canal therapy works
Each tooth has an inner pulp chamber beneath the hard-outer enamel and dentin layers. This chamber contains the pulp, blood vessels, and nerves – it is like the heart of the tooth. If the contents of this inner chamber become damaged or infected, it can not only cause intense pain, but also compromise the overall health of the tooth. With root canal therapy, we can often save your child’s tooth from needing to be prematurely extracted, preserving the tooth’s important function in your child’s mouth.
First, we will take a painless digital x-ray to help determine whether root canal treatment is the best course of action; we can also refer to this x-ray during the procedure. During the root canal treatment, we numb the tooth so that your child cannot feel anything in the treatment area. Then, the infected or damaged material is removed, and the chamber is thoroughly cleaned and sanitized, and then it is filled with a rubber-like material. Finally, the tooth is sealed and then typically capped with a crown.
Reasons a root canal may be recommended
Our dentists may recommend root canal therapy for your child if their tooth has:
- Decay that has penetrated through the enamel and dentin into the inner pulp chamber
- Damage due to a traumatic injury
Are root canals painful?
Root canal therapy has received a bad reputation for being a painful or traumatic procedure, but in fact, they can provide immense relief from pain! With our gentle touch, friendly staff, effective numbing agents, and fun movies to keep your child occupied during their treatment, they will hardly know anything has happened. From your child’s perspective, the whole process is like getting a filling. For nervous kids or those who have a hard time sitting still, we offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas) or general anesthesia to keep them comfortable, calm, and relaxed.
If your child has been complaining that their tooth hurts, or even if they haven’t, we recommend that you do not delay in bringing them in to see a dentist. The sooner that issues are caught, the easier they typically are to treat. Call Sweet Tooth Orthodontics and Children’s Dentistry today!
